The California Architecture & Design MRG held its inaugural meeting on Friday, March 9th through Saturday March 10th at UC Davis campus.

This innaugural event brought together scholars from across the UC system working in architecture and design. The meeting was a place to begin rethinking how the traditional disciplinary work of design can be done in a more interdisciplinary and collaborative fashion. The meeting fostered a community of UC scholars working in design, generates innovation in design research and education, and promotes collaborations with public and private entities invested in the future of California design.

Members discussed the state of research on California architecture and design. We began by considering what members’ current individual project contribute to this topic. From there, the group considered the futures across UC for the historical and theoretical study of architecture and design.

On April 26th and 27th, the Consortium on California Architecture and Design will hold our second workshop at UC Davis.  Faculty and graduate student participants from UC Riverside, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and the California College of the Arts will discuss our contributions to Archipedia, the online encyclopedia of notable American buildings and sites organized by the Society of Architectural Historians.

We will also be discussing future collaborative possibilities, including exhibitions on California architecture and design at the new UC Davis art museum (director Rachel Teagle will visit us on Saturday morning), collaborative publishing, common research interests and the state of the field, organizing symposia, grant writing for future meetings and events, and working with graduate students at different UC campuses.
